CARLOS MUNIZ Florida Florida Republicans High Court Ron DeSantis State governments of the United States Supreme Court Of Florida Supreme Court Of Pakistan TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WEAR-TV) — Governor Ron DeSantis has made his third appointment to the Florida Supreme Court, naming a nearly 18-year veteran of state Government rather than a judge to the state’s highest court. Carlos Muniz was the Assistant General Counsel to Governor Jeb Bush in 2000, worked in the House Speaker’s office and for Attorney General Pam Bondi as her Chief of Staff. Most recently Muniz worked as the General Counsel for the US Department of Education. Following his appointment, Muniz promised to put aside his political preferences as a justice. “In my new role, I will have a solemn duty to set aside my own policy preferences. I wholeheartedly welcome that obligation. And as I begin this assignment, I want to make three commitments. To excellence, to humility and to liberty” Supreme Court Justice Carlos Muniz said. Muniz is the first Supreme Court Justice appointment in more than 20 years who comes to the high court without first having served on a lower court. “To bring somebody who’s coming as a practitioner into the court, I like the way that meshes with the people who are there and the experiences that they’ve had” Gov. DeSantis stated. Muniz becomes the 89th Supreme Court justice since statehood. He faces a merit retention vote in 2020.
